Born on May 6th, 1796, the son of John Hutchinson, RN, of Lettercross, Stonehaven; entered the Bengal Army as Assistant Surgeon on April 6th, 1819, and was promoted Surgeon on November 18th, 1829. Born on November 19th, 1786, at 1 Newhall Street, Birmingham, the son of George Russell by his wife Martha, daughter of John Skey. His father, a Birmingham merchant, ruined at the outset of the American War, was a Unitarian and a prominent member of the congregation of Joseph Priestley (1733-1804).

Educated at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals. He practised at Dorchester, and was Senior Surgeon at the Dorset County Hospital. After his retirement he resided at Hillside, Cheltenham, and died there on August 3rd, 1877. His photograph is in the College Collection.

Practised in Wolverhampton, where he was Surgeon to the Staffordshire South County Infirmary, and at the time of his death Consulting Surgeon to the same institution, then known as the South Staffordshire Hospital. He died on or before September 27th, 1852.

Lived in Cheltenham, where his practice was extensive, and throughout his whole career he deservedly retained the respect and love of a very large circle.
