Details Ranjithsingha Thambugala was a general surgeon in the Sri Lanka Government Health Service. He was educated at Trinity College (Kandy), where he excelled in his studies and was a school prefect. He graduated with MB BS second class honours from the University of Ceylon with a second degree from the University of London. In the UK he worked at the Lambeth Hospital, and the Royal Sussex County Hospital. His postgraduate studies were at Liverpool University and the Postgraduate Medical School of London where he received a Wellcome grant for research and was later awarded the Hazel Clifford postgraduate studentship by the University of London. In Sri Lanka he was a consultant surgeon in general hospitals at Batticaloa, Panadura, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Colombo North Teaching Hospital and General Hospital Colombo. He was a council member of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka, and a member of the International Society of Surgery representing Sri Lanka. He published on various surgical topics, especially on techniques of surgery, in the *British Journal of Surgery*, *The Lancet* and the *Ceylon Medical Journal*, among other publications. Ranjithsingha was a well-known doctor who was totally dedicated to his patients and students, so much so that he did not engage in private practice outside his working hours at the government hospital. His patients appreciated his kindness and empathy. He was respected by every person who met him, be they rich or poor, senior, peer or junior. Ranjithsingha Thambugala died on 13 October 1997.

Details Mahmud Butt was a general surgeon who qualified MB, BS in the Punjab in 1955. He became a fellow of the College in 1977. Sadly little is known of his surgical career apart from the fact that he worked at the Royal Infirmary, Huddersfield in the 1980's. He was living in Leeds when he died on 16 March 2009, survived by his wife, Moira.

Details Sardar Ali Sheikh was professor of surgery at King Edward Medical College (now University), Lahore, the second oldest medical school on the Indian subcontinent. He joined the college in April 1947 as a demonstrator in the department of anatomy, went on to become a clinical assistant, and finally professor of surgery. He published a thesis in 1950 on hyperplastic ileocaecal tuberculosis. He was principal of King Edward Medical College from 1971 to 1973, when he retired. A student hostel has been named after him. He died prematurely from a heart attack at the age of 63.

He was president of the section of odontology of the Royal Society of Medicine in 1981. He wrote the textbook *Occlusion* (1975, John Wright and Sons Limited, Bristol). The College was notified of his death in 2003.

Details Santanu Mukherji was a general practitioner in Yorkshire, with a special interest in cardiology. He was born in Calcutta. His father, Captain Maniklal Mukherji, was a founder member of the Indian Radiological Association, and physician to and friend of the poet Rabindranath Tagore, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Santanu was educated at St Xavier's College, Calcutta, and the Nilratan Sircar Medical College (formally the Campbell Medical School). He went to Britain for postgraduate studies, and gained his FRCS and FRCS Edinburgh in the same year, 1968. He was appreciated by his fellow doctors. Derek J Rowlands, a consultant cardiologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary, records how he was 'a delightful, stimulating and inspirational colleague'. He was survived by his wife Dee, his son and two daughters, and one granddaughter. One of his daughters entered the medical profession.

Two of his brothers - Hiary and Merlyn - also became surgeons and fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons. Lachlan Kumarasinghe held his post at Kettering from 1970 until his retirement in 1992. His wife, Mrs B Kumarasinghe, informed the College of his death on 7 September 2006. He was 78.

Gaining her FRCS in 1956, she was appointed to the West Midlands Regional Health Authority as a specialist in orthopaedics. For most of her time in the West Midlands she was living in Stoke on Trent, but when she died on 3 August 2021 she was apparently living in Coventry.

Merlyn Kumarasinhe attended the Royal College, Colombo and then studied medicine at the University of Ceylon. After junior posts he went to the UK, where he held posts in Hitchin and at St Mary Abbot's Hospital, Kensington, London. He gained his FRCS in 1958. In 1959 he returned to Ceylon and became a consultant at Anuradhapura General Hospital. He moved to the General Hospital in Kandy in 1964 and to the General Hospital in Colombo in 1968, both of which were teaching hospitals. Outside medicine he was a farmer. In 1958 he married Renee M C Le Goff.

Details Professor Mahalaingamoorthy Natarajan was professor of orthopaedics at Madras Medical College, India. He was born on 18 March 1920 in Kamuthi, in what was formerly Madras State, the son of Mahalingamoorthy and Pakkam Natarajan. After graduating BA, he studied medicine at Stanley Medical College in Madras. It was said that he won so many prizes during his student years he was known as *Medal Natarajan*. During the second world war he served with the RAMC and then proceeded to continue his orthopaedic training in the UK at the University of Liverpool, where he passed his MCh Orth. On his return to India he was appointed orthopaedic surgeon at the Stanley Medical College and Hospital and was also a visiting surgeon at a government tuberculosis sanatorium. In 1957 he was appointed professor and head of the department of orthopaedic surgery at Madras Medical College and the Government General Hospital. Remaining in this post until 1976, he was responsible for the development of advanced courses in orthopaedics, a school of physiotherapy and a school of prosthesis and orthotics. He also helped plan the Government Institute of Rehabilitation and Artificial Limb Centre in Madras and organise the accident services for Tamil Nadu. In 1982 he published the highly successful *Textbook of orthopaedics* in two volumes, it has since appeared in seven new editions. Appointed dean and principal of the Madras Medical College, when he retired he became emeritus professor of orthopaedic surgery. Active in numerous national and international bodies he was, among others, a member of the World Health Organisation’s Advisory Panel on Rehabilitation, a fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association and a founder member of World Orthopaedic Concern. He died in 2005 aged 85, survived by his five children. The eldest son, Mayil Vahanan Natarajan, born 24 December 1954, followed him into the study of orthopaedic surgery and is now a distinguished orthopaedic oncologist.

Details Anthony Radcliffe was a consultant ENT surgeon in London. He was born in South Africa and grew up in the same small village as his long-term friend Aaron Klug, the Nobel laureate, who influenced him greatly. Radcliffe qualified in Ireland and completed junior posts at the West London Hospital, Hemel Hempstead, and was encouraged by John H Young, the influential house governor of the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, to go there. He subsequently obtained ENT consultant posts at Willesden General Hospital, the London Jewish Hospital and the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital. He was a renowned operator and teacher, and acquired a larger private practice in Harley Street, London. His reputation ensured that he had a stream of medical visitors. When the Royal Society of Medicine no longer offered a venue for the presentation of difficult and puzzling ENT problems, he formed a club to do so. His wife, Lillian, was his practice manager. His son is a consultant ENT surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital.

Details Stafford George Mayer was a surgeon in Durban, South Africa. He studied medicine at Cambridge University and the London Hospital Medical School, and qualified MRCS LRCP in 1934 and, three years later, gained his MB BChir and his FRCS. He was a house surgeon at King George Hospital, Ilford, and at the London Hospital and was then a surgical registrar at Southend General Hospital within the Emergency Medical Service. In 1940 he became a surgical registrar and first assistant at the London Hospital. Two years later, he joined the RAMC as a medical specialist, becoming a lieutenant colonel and officer in charge of the surgical division of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. After the war, he emigrated to South Africa, where he was initially an assistant surgeon at Addington Hospital, Durban, and then a surgeon at the King Edward VIII Hospital, also in Durban. In the late 1950s, he left South Africa and seems to have gone to Alberta, Canada. The Royal College of Surgeons subsequently lost contact with him.

Details George Patrikios was chief of surgery at Sebokeng Hospital, Gauteng, South Africa. He was born on 13 February 1937 in Salisbury, Rhodesia, the third child and second son of Greek parents – Nestor Theodore Patrikios, a tobacco grader, and Eudokia Patrikios née Tselentis. He was educated at the David Livingstone School and St George’s College in Salisbury, and went on to study medicine at Trinity College, Dublin. He qualified in 1961. He was a demonstrator in anatomy and a tutor in surgery at Trinity College, and a research fellow for the Medical Research Council of Ireland. He gained his FRCS in 1969. He later became the chief surgeon at Sebokeng Hospital, Gauteng, South Africa. He played rugby at Trinity, and enjoyed playing squash and wildfowling. He was married twice. In 1965, he married Helga Maria Atkinson. They had two sons, Paul and Nestor, and a daughter, Georgia. His second wife was Heidi Holland, a prominent Zimbabwean journalist. They had a son, Nick. George Patrikios died two years after being badly injured in a car crash.

In 1973 he married an Israeli woman, Osnat, who had two grown up daughters. She had emmigrated to the United States in 1966. In November 1986 they were living in Albertson, New York State when Osnat won $12 million in the New York State lottery. The couple were then in their mid- to late fifties and both promptly planned to retire, they told a news conference. He died in 2003 aged 73 or 74 and was survived by his wife and family.

Details Alastair Cassie was a consultant surgeon to the Burnley Health District. Earlier posts had been as senior registrar in surgery to the Manchester Royal Infirmary and surgical tutor at Manchester University. In 1956 he passed the fellowship of the Edinburgh college and the FRCS two years later. He contributed a chapter entitled "Suture material and the healing of surgical wounds" to *Operative surgery and management* 1981 and published an article on "Alcohol and road accidents" (*BMJ* 1961) and on "Catgut and polyglycolic acid" (*Ann RCS* 1977). He died in Edinburgh on 17 July 2010, survived by his wife, Sheila, children and grandchildren.

He retired in September 1971, and died on 4 August 1992.

Moving to London he took a post at the Hammersmith Hospital and then worked in the departments of orthopaedics and plastic surgery at St Charles Hospital. He was an associate member of the British Orthopaedic Association and of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons. He served as a squadron leader in the RAFVR medical brigade. He died on 15 September 2010.

He emigrated to Oakville, Ontario, where he worked at St Michael’s Hospital. He spent much time in charitable work overseas, including visits to the British Methodist Hospital in Ilesha, Nigeria, in 1965 and later to St Kitts and St Nevis. He published a case report of combined intrauterine and extrauterine pregnancy. He died of cancer on 30 June 2005 aged 83, and was survived by his wife of 52 years, Helene.

Details Somasunderam Pothalingam was a surgeon at the Children's Hospital in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and at Wanstead Hospital, London, and an honorary assistant in surgery at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. He went on to gain his fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1964 and from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1967. Somasunderam Pothalingam died on 6 October 2008. He was 81. He was survived by his wife, Margie, and sons Ketish and Natesh.

He specialised in surgery in the UK, becoming a fellow of the Edinburgh college in 1961 and of the English college in 1962. For the next 10 years he worked in Northampton, Nottingham, Chester, Liverpool and Tulane Hospital, New Orleans, before returning to Spain as chief of surgery at the Hospital Virgen de la Salud in Toledo. He was also a consultant in surgery to the US Air Force at Torrejón de Ardoz, Madrid. He published some 30 papers, mostly in English-speaking journals, on vascular and transplant surgery.
