He was President of the Hunterian Society and delivered the Oration in 1864 on &quot;The Cultivation of Medical Science and Art&quot;; this was published in London during that year as an octavo volume. He retired from the IMS on December 31st, 1855; practised at 28 George Street, Hanover Square, then at Hendon, Middlesex, later at Frant, near Tunbridge Wells, and died at Brighton on March 31st, 1887. As Surgeon in charge of the Native Hospital at Calcutta, he was a member of the Committee appointed to inquire into the anaesthetic effects of mesmerism for the purposes of operation.
