Details Ranjithsingha Thambugala was a general surgeon in the Sri Lanka Government Health Service. He was educated at Trinity College (Kandy), where he excelled in his studies and was a school prefect. He graduated with MB BS second class honours from the University of Ceylon with a second degree from the University of London. In the UK he worked at the Lambeth Hospital, and the Royal Sussex County Hospital. His postgraduate studies were at Liverpool University and the Postgraduate Medical School of London where he received a Wellcome grant for research and was later awarded the Hazel Clifford postgraduate studentship by the University of London. In Sri Lanka he was a consultant surgeon in general hospitals at Batticaloa, Panadura, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Colombo North Teaching Hospital and General Hospital Colombo. He was a council member of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka, and a member of the International Society of Surgery representing Sri Lanka. He published on various surgical topics, especially on techniques of surgery, in the *British Journal of Surgery*, *The Lancet* and the *Ceylon Medical Journal*, among other publications. Ranjithsingha was a well-known doctor who was totally dedicated to his patients and students, so much so that he did not engage in private practice outside his working hours at the government hospital. His patients appreciated his kindness and empathy. He was respected by every person who met him, be they rich or poor, senior, peer or junior. Ranjithsingha Thambugala died on 13 October 1997.

Details Mahmud Butt was a general surgeon who qualified MB, BS in the Punjab in 1955. He became a fellow of the College in 1977. Sadly little is known of his surgical career apart from the fact that he worked at the Royal Infirmary, Huddersfield in the 1980's. He was living in Leeds when he died on 16 March 2009, survived by his wife, Moira.

Details Sardar Ali Sheikh was professor of surgery at King Edward Medical College (now University), Lahore, the second oldest medical school on the Indian subcontinent. He joined the college in April 1947 as a demonstrator in the department of anatomy, went on to become a clinical assistant, and finally professor of surgery. He published a thesis in 1950 on hyperplastic ileocaecal tuberculosis. He was principal of King Edward Medical College from 1971 to 1973, when he retired. A student hostel has been named after him. He died prematurely from a heart attack at the age of 63.

He was born on 12 December 1920 in Colombo, the son of Cyril Mendis Kumarasinhe, an interpreter, and Florence Bridget Kumarasinhe née Fernando. Two of his brothers - Lachlan and Hiary (who spelt the family name Kumarasinghe) - also became fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons. Merlyn Kumarasinhe attended the Royal College, Colombo and then studied medicine at the University of Ceylon. After junior posts he went to the UK, where he held posts in Hitchin and at St Mary Abbot's Hospital, Kensington, London. He gained his FRCS in 1958. In 1959 he returned to Ceylon and became a consultant at Anuradhapura General Hospital. He moved to the General Hospital in Kandy in 1964 and to the General Hospital in Colombo in 1968, both of which were teaching hospitals. Outside medicine he was a farmer. In 1958 he married Renee M C Le Goff.

Details Stafford George Mayer was a surgeon in Durban, South Africa. He studied medicine at Cambridge University and the London Hospital Medical School, and qualified MRCS LRCP in 1934 and, three years later, gained his MB BChir and his FRCS. He was a house surgeon at King George Hospital, Ilford, and at the London Hospital and was then a surgical registrar at Southend General Hospital within the Emergency Medical Service. In 1940 he became a surgical registrar and first assistant at the London Hospital. Two years later, he joined the RAMC as a medical specialist, becoming a lieutenant colonel and officer in charge of the surgical division of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. After the war, he emigrated to South Africa, where he was initially an assistant surgeon at Addington Hospital, Durban, and then a surgeon at the King Edward VIII Hospital, also in Durban. In the late 1950s, he left South Africa and seems to have gone to Alberta, Canada. The Royal College of Surgeons subsequently lost contact with him.

Details George Patrikios was chief of surgery at Sebokeng Hospital, Gauteng, South Africa. He was born on 13 February 1937 in Salisbury, Rhodesia, the third child and second son of Greek parents – Nestor Theodore Patrikios, a tobacco grader, and Eudokia Patrikios née Tselentis. He was educated at the David Livingstone School and St George’s College in Salisbury, and went on to study medicine at Trinity College, Dublin. He qualified in 1961. He was a demonstrator in anatomy and a tutor in surgery at Trinity College, and a research fellow for the Medical Research Council of Ireland. He gained his FRCS in 1969. He later became the chief surgeon at Sebokeng Hospital, Gauteng, South Africa. He played rugby at Trinity, and enjoyed playing squash and wildfowling. He was married twice. In 1965, he married Helga Maria Atkinson. They had two sons, Paul and Nestor, and a daughter, Georgia. His second wife was Heidi Holland, a prominent Zimbabwean journalist. They had a son, Nick. George Patrikios died two years after being badly injured in a car crash.

Details Mortimer Burdman was a general surgeon from New York. He was born in Brooklyn in the late 1920's and had a son by his first wife. In 1973 he married an Israeli woman, Osnat, who had two grown up daughters. She had emmigrated to the United States in 1966. In November 1986 they were living in Albertson, New York State when Osnat won $12 million in the New York State lottery. The couple were then in their mid- to late fifties and both promptly planned to retire, they told a news conference. He died in 2003 aged 73 or 74 and was survived by his wife and family.

He died in Edinburgh on 17 July 2010, survived by his wife, Sheila, children and grandchildren.

Details Monoranjan Duari was a general surgeon at Burnley General Hospital. Born in Howrah in India, he moved to the UK in 1954 after graduating in medicine. He did house jobs in Edinburgh and Devon and spent some time at the Hartley Hospital in Colne. After passing the fellowship of the college in 1963, he joined the staff of the Reedyford Memorial Hospital in Nelson, Lancashire. In 1978 he was appointed consultant surgeon at Burnley General Hospital and stayed there until his retirement in 1994. He was also a long serving trustee of the Pendleside Hospice, having supported it since its foundation. A keen supporter of Burnley Football Club, he had held a season ticket since 1959. He also frequently attended the matches at Burnley and Colne cricket clubs. In his retirement he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and learning Italian and French. While at the Reedyford he had met his wife Margaret, a nurse, and they married in 1965. She survived him and was 73 years old when he died on 24 December 2014 aged 84. He was also survived by their two daughters, one of whom was Meena Tomlinson, and four grandchildren.

Details John Blake was a consultant surgeon at Mayday and Shirley Oaks hospitals, Croydon, and St Anthony's Hospital in Cheam. He was born on 7 February 1932. He was educated at Cambridge University and Westminster Hospital Medical School. He was a house surgeon at St James' Hospital, Balham, and then became a resident surgical officer at Woolwich Memorial Hospital. He was a surgical registrar at Westminster Hospital and in Southampton, and was subsequently appointed to his consultant post in Croydon. He was a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons. He was married to Helena, a fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists. John Blake died on 2 November 2013. He was 81.

Details Shelton Aloysius Cabraal was the father of neurosurgery in Sri Lanka. Having passed the fellowship in 1951, he returned to Colombo and, in 1956, founded the first neurosurgical unit in the country. State of the art for its time, it was located in the General Hospital. Initially the unit had 12 beds and it was here that most neurosurgical operations in Sri Lanka took place including pioneering skull base surgery. Three years later the unit expanded and took over the entire fourth floor of the building. A second neurosurgeon, Daivel Weinman, was appointed in 1962, having been Cabraal’s trainee. A keen bridge player, he was a member of the General Hospital’s bridge club. He died on 25 February 1996.

Details Robert Anthony Bailey was born in Greytown, Natal, South Africa, the son of Robert Bailey, a company secretary, and Hilda, a music teacher and housewife. He was educated at Grey School, Port Elizabeth, and then went on to study medicine at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, and the University of Cape Town. He qualified MB BCh in 1949. He trained at Provincial Hospital, Port Elizabeth, and at Conradie and Victoria hospitals, Cape Town. He also went to the UK and gained his FRCS in 1954. We know nothing of his subsequent career. Outside medicine he enjoyed golf, music and photography. In May 1954 he married Sheila Maureen Watts, who was also a doctor. They had three children, James, Jill and Nigel. He died on 15 October 1995.

Details Marco Barreca was a consultant surgeon in the upper gastrointestinal surgery department at Luton and Dunstable Hospital. He qualified in Rome from la Sapienza University in 1995 and passed the fellowship of the college in 2011. Having joined the staff at Luton in 2002, he was especially interested in bariatric and metabolic surgery, gastrointestinal disorders and minimally invasive surgery. A popular and vibrant member of the team, on his sudden and untimely demise his colleagues organised a bread making competition in his memory. A passionate bread maker, he would make sourdough bread every weekend with a starter that had been in his family for over 50 years and he apparently delighted in discussing the recipe given the slightest opportunity. He died on 19 October 2016 aged 46.

Details Shri Rameshwar was professor of surgery at the Armed Forces Medical College, Poona, India. Born on 10 October 1904 in Meerut, he was the eldest of the four sons of Choudry Girver Singh Rameshwar, an agriculturalist, and his wife Kaur née Ram whose father was also involved in agriculture. Educated at the Government School in Meerut, he then read medicine at Lucknow University before travelling to the UK to continue his training at the London Hospital where he was mentored by Sir Albert James Walton and Russell John Howard. He passed the fellowship of the college in 1934. On his return to India he joined the Indian Medical Service as a regular officer in 1935 and retired in 1961 with the rank of brigadier. He became chief medical officer of the Tingri Medical Association, Assam from 1962 to 1970. In 1924 he married Shanta Singh, who was the daughter of a doctor, Bhupal Singh. They had two sons who became managers in the Assam Tea Gardens. A keen tennis player and golfer he only retired from playing in his late sixties. It is not known when or where he died but he may have returned to Meerut, Uttar Pradesh as that is his last known address.

Details Ahmed Nabeel Hassan was a general surgeon in Alexandria, Egypt. He was born in Alexandria on 8 December 1935, the son of Hassan Hassan, a businessman, and Dawlat Hassan née Darwich. He studied medicine at Alexandria University, qualifying in 1960. He gained diplomas in general surgery from Cairo University in 1964 and Alexandria University in 1970, and his FRCS in 1976. He served in the Egyptian Army as a lieutenant colonel. In 1968 he married Madiha Fahmy. They had two sons. Ahmed Nabeel Hassan died on 1 April 2007. He was 71.

Details Robert Marshall Laird was born on 4 February 1919. He studied medicine at Queen’s University Belfast, qualifying MB, BCh, BAO in 1942 and working there as a demonstrator in physiology. He served as a flight lieutenant in the RAFVR. After house jobs at Preston Royal Infirmary, he passed the fellowship of the college in 1951. He was appointed consultant surgeon to the East Antrim Hospital group and became a fellow of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. He died on 13 June 2018 aged 99.

Details William (‘Bill’) Murdoch Lennox was a general surgeon based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He was born on 19 January 1930 in West Derby, Lancashire. His father was William Murdoch Lennox III; his mother was Dorothy May Lennox née Smith. He studied medicine in London and qualified in 1954. He gained his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1961 and of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the same year. Lennox died on 19 September 2016. He was 86.
