Amendments policy

The Lives team is aware that there may be factual errors in some of the published obituaries, due to possible inaccurate sources at the time of writing as well as typographical errors. If you note a factual error with one of the obituaries, please let us know by emailing lives@rcseng.ac.uk.

Please be aware, however, that proof of any factual amendment will be required in most cases, especially relating to obituaries from the 19th century and earlier. Examples of proof include:

  • birth certificate
  • death certificate
  • marriage certificate
  • parish records
  • degree certificates
  • university records.

Please note that the Lives editorial policy states that the obituaries reflect family situations (children and grandchildren) at the time of death only, not the generations that follow.

If you wish to add additional information to an existing published obituary, especially when little information about a surgeon exists, please email lives@rcseng.ac.uk for author’s instructions and advice. Please note that all submitted obituaries go through a stringent editorial process and the editor’s decision is final.

Please note that the published date at the bottom of each obituary does not necessarily reflect the time in which it was written: it indicates the date when the obituary was first put online.
